Zack Snyder’s Justice League, as it’s been named, is now available to stream on HBO Max. It’s a re-edited version of Zack Snyder’s 2017 film Justice League, which he left early due to personal tragedy. HBO Max offered Snyder the opportunity to piece together his original footage that had been left on the cutting room floor after a years-long fan campaign and with the cast’s support.

zack snyder’s justice league was slashed on HBO. Max is indeed a shambles — but for a much longer period of time.
Zack Snyder took a break from work on the superhero team film “Justice League” after the death of his 20-year-old daughter in 2017. Joss Whedon was chosen to finish the project, which included significantly reducing the duration of the film. The end result was a widely panned, jumbled mess.
The director’s cut of “Justice League,” which will be released on HBO Max on Thursday, is both a victory over personal tragedy and a challenge to a culture of professional impunity. Fans are delighted, and cast members have shared their joy.
Given this convincing backstory, I sincerely hope that “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” is a masterpiece, or at the very least a good film. But that isn’t the case. The director’s cut is a 240-minute slog through the tedium. At twice the duration, the issues that plagued the theatrical version of the film — too many characters, an unfocused storyline, and a profoundly uninteresting antagonist — are exacerbated rather than alleviated.
Snyder’s version of “Justice League,” like most of his DC Extended Universe films, is at least poor in some fascinating ways. The theatrical cut was yet another haphazardly put-together corporate product. The latest four-hour version, on the other hand, gives viewers the most full image of Snyder’s vision — a vision that haphazardly conflates heroism with shock and awe, and goodness with superpowers.
The plot’s general outlines remain the same. Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds), an extradimensional adversary and silly-looking horns with an unfortunate name, arrives on Earth to collect three magical devices known as Mother Boxes. These boxes, once assembled, will help him to (you guessed it) conquer the world. To save him, Batman (Ben Affleck) assembles a squad of meta-humans, resurrecting the fallen Superman (Henry Cavill) in the process.
The four-hour cut brings a lot of backstory to an already complicated story. It turns out that Steppenwolf isn’t the main character. He’s just the pawn of Darkseid, another ranting extradimensional CGI abomination (Ray Porter). Snyder also gives Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher, a lot of screen time. Cyborg’s character arc is fairly standard; he has conflicting feelings about his father and his abilities, which he must reconcile. Fisher’s expanded position is still welcome, considering his accusations of violence and the traditional sidelining of Black characters in superhero team movies.
